As an outsider, a tourist, I only ever paused briefly on the question: ‘Why theme the park to the state of its setting, why wouldn’t I just go and do the real thing?’from State of Mine

The five years of Disney’s California Adventure takes center stage for Issue 5 with a personal op-ed article looking at the design and narrative structure of the park. Senior Concept Writer Kevin Rafferty talks about the creation of the Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley To The Rescue! attraction and the history of the ride that it replaced: Superstar Limo. The newest Disney resort in Hong Kong is explored further with the Grand Opening festivities and the construction of the park featuring interviews with WDI’s chief architect, Wing Chao and the park’s managing director John Verity. We also take a walk in the park with Hong Kong Disneyland horticultural designer John Sorenson and look at the creative process of producing entertainment for this Magic Kingdom.

Animation gets a double feature with a look at the inspiration that Disney Legend Joe Grant can provide to current animation and the development of two of Disney’s contemporary Villains, Yzma from Emperor’s New Groove with animator Dale Baer and Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame with animator Kathy Zielinski. In addition we continue the celebration of Disneyland’s 50 years with a visit to the Henry Ford Museum’s Behind the Magic: Disneyland at Fifty exhibition.
